EXFOLIANTS:

 Exfoliants are products or substances which help with the removal of dead skin cells from the skins surface.

Benefits of exfoliants:

  • Improved skin texture:It smooths rough patches and reduce the appearance of fine lines.
  • Brighter complexion:It fades hyperpigmentation and even out skin tone.
  • Unclogged pores:Exfoliation prevents breakouts by removing dead skin cells that can clog pores.

Types of Exfoliants:
  • Chemical exfoliants
  • Physical exfoliants

Physical exfoliants-These are exfoliants that physically rub off dead or rough skin
Examples are:sugar,salt,grains ,coffee grounds.

Chemical exfoliants-They are more gentle in the process of exfoliation
Chemical exfoliants involves the use of acids to dissolve the bonds between dead skin cells ,allowing them to slough off more gently.
        
                    Different chemical exfoliants:
                             -    Beta  hydroxy Acids(BHA)
                                 Alpha hydroxy Acids(AHA)


Beta Hydroxy Acids

These are soluble acids which means they can penetrate into the pore deeply.
They dissolve excess sebum hence exfoliating inside the pores and reducing inflammation.
It's known for their ability to unclog pores,making them excellent choice for people dealing with black heads,white heads and non-inflamed acne
Example;Salicylic Acid

Salicylic Acid
It's concentration is 0.05%-2% since it's soluble
It's able to penetrate the pores to dissolve sebum and other debric
It also manages excessive oiliness and texture.Works well for whiteheads ,blackheads and non inflamed breakouts
Great for dandruff.

Alpha Hydroxy Acids(AHA)
These are water soluble acids which works by loosening the bond between skin cells hence leading them to shed off.
It's effective at addressing concerns like rough texture ,limits breakouts and fades dark sports.
Examples:Glycolic acid,Lactic acid,Mandelic acid

Glycolic Acid
Derived from Sugarcane.
It helps exfoliate the skin surface ,helping to remove dead skin cells,Improve texture and reduce fine lines and uneven skin tone.
Known for it's effectiveness and it can be quite irritating.
It has a concentration of 3-10%

Lactic Acid
It is more of beginner friendly,it makes the skin softer and smoother.
It's found in concentrations of 5-15% .
It penetrates the dermis to boost collagen and elastin productions
It's great for eczema and works well for hormonal acne due to it's anti-bacterial properties.

Mandelic Acid
The most gentle AHA with exfoliating properties
Known for it's anti-inflammatory properties making it effective for those with super sensitive skin.
Helps with acne control and evening out skin tone.
